There is often confusion about the difference between web hosting and domains. While they are two completely different things, the concepts are sometimes confused.
Domain names
Domain names are unique names on the internet. For example, our own domain name is: redactieonline.nl. You register your domain name through a provider, so that no one else can use it.
DNS
DNS stands for Domain Name System . Once your domain name has been fixed and your files and database have been created, the internet still needs to know that they belong together. The function of the DNS is, among other things, to translate the domain into an IP address (of the server on which the files are stored), so that you can access the correct website files from your browser.
Of the different forms of hosting, the VPS is the most labor-intensive for us. We must ensure that the correct software is installed and that it is up to date. We therefore regularly schedule a security check for all our customers with a support contract. We check website security using online tools, such as ImmuniWeb and Qualys SSL Labs . If the results of the inspection are not satisfactory, we immediately take measures to limit the - often minor - safety risks. For example, we recently conducted a security round for all our Umbraco 7 websites on the various VPSs. These are now all achieving excellent scores again.
We make super good websites and the hosting and security are also in order: top! But that is certainly no reason to sit back. A problem or error can always occur. Ultimately, it remains human work. Uptime Robot is a tool that monitors the uptime, the opposite of downtime, of websites. Uptime expresses the reliability and availability of a website as a percentage. At Vrolijk Online we have set the Uptime Robot to access all websites and web shops on which we provide support every 5 minutes. About 9999 times out of 10,000 the result is good and nothing happens. If there is a problem, Uptime Robot will sound the alarm in the form of notifications on our developers' smartphones and an email to our support inbox.
